Monaco and the Mediterranean (RIMM)

Another successful event!

7 and 8 March 2024

Monaco Oceanographic Museum

"Gardens in the Mediterranean"

Since its creation in 2001, the International Encounters between Monaco and the Mediterranean, held under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II, have brought together leading figures from the scientific, artistic and literary worlds every two years. In 2022, the theme of the Rencontres was "Mediterranean Islands, Light and Shadow".

The twelfth edition focused on the theme of "Gardens in the Mediterranean". The XIIth RIMM was a great success. Garden historians, philosophers, sociologists and artists invited the audience on a journey through time and space to pay a sensitive and erudite tribute to "Gardens in the Mediterranean", at the XIIth Rencontres on 7 and 8 March 2024 at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.

The three themes (Time of Abundance, Time of Virtues and Time of the Marvellous) were dealt with in depth, each contribution enriching the next.

This symposium was dedicated to Spring, the time when nature comes into its own. The seventeen experts present spoke chronologically about the history of gardens, their material and spiritual dimensions, and their contribution to the world of ideas.

Alain Baraton, Head Gardener at the Domaine de Trianon, the Grand Parc de Versailles and the Jardins de Marly, gave a brilliant inaugural lecture on the influence of Italian gardens on the Parc de Versailles. Among other things, he talked about the creation of the Orangerie and the planting of certain Mediterranean species.

The RIMM Prize was awarded to Laurent Derobert, artist and mathematician. H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco presented him with a sculpture by Monegasque artist Frédérique Nalbandian.

The proceedings of this new edition will be published in early 2025 and will be available in spring 2025 on the RIMM website. What the public had to say: "We wanted to thank you for the wonderful time you had at the conferences on 7 and 8 March", "A thousand thanks for the choice of subject, the organisation and running of the RIMM. I spent two marvellous days learning in a prestigious setting, a kind of paradise on earth", "Thank you for these exceptionally rich meetings.

You have built up a loyal audience and brought together some fascinating speakers". The speakers say: "A big well done for a very successful conference", "A big thank you and well done for these RIMMs, which are still as exciting and rich as ever", "A very big thank you also for all the organisation, which was perfect and warm in every way.

These days were an enchantment for the participants, thanks to you", "I was very happy to meet you and to hear talks on so many different aspects of the garden, which contributed to broadening my knowledge", "Thank you again for the invitation to take part in this very prestigious symposium. Your organisation was perfect, and the days with the participants were very enjoyable in wonderful surroundings", "A huge thank you for your invitation, your words, your gentle hospitality, and this encouragement with pink fingers".
