Inaugurated on July 4 by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, “Turner, the sublime heritage” opened its doors to the public this Saturday, July 6!
Presenting a collection of leading works in a unique scenography of more than 2000 m2, this exhibition is an invitation to a journey through the sublime representations of the world of Joseph Mallord William Turner, from his landscapes to the elemental explorations of light and of the atmosphere of which he was a precursor and master.

Turner uses the elements - mountains, sky, storms - to grandiose effect in his works: he not only captures the expressive power of the forces of nature but also reinvents the landscape genre. His works became a reference in the notion of the sublime which nourished the aesthetics of landscape in England in the 19th century and well beyond.

Coming from the Tate collection, which here grants its largest ever loan of oils on canvas, a balanced selection of 80 canvases and works on paper by the artist reveals his eminently sensitive and poetic conception of landscape, illustrating his innovative style and its qualities of abstraction without equivalent in the history of painting.

His determining influence and by extension his legacy, are put into dialogue throughout the exhibition, with around thirty works by major modern and contemporary artists: John Akomfrah, Edward Burtinsky, Peter Doig, Olafur Eliasson, Howard Hodgkin, Roni Horn, Richard Long, Lisa Milroy, Cornelia Parker, Katie Paterson, Laure Prouvost, Mark Rothko, Wolfgang Tillmans, James Turrell and Jessica Warboys.

Turner, the Master of the Sublime, in dialogue with contemporary artists around the representation of the landscape and the relationship of man to his environment, this is the bold approach of the exhibition curator, Elizabeth Brooke, an exhibition- event not to be missed and whose theme echoes a very current subject.
