You are a young artist: do you consider yourself an emirati artist or international artist?
I consider myself an Emirati artist carrying to the world our message of love and tolerance wrapped in rich heritage, love of our nation, and world leadership in many ields. My art speaks of my passion and identity.
I think that today the world has become one global culture made of many and many small cultures each contributing to the big culture.
Here has been a strong enlightening wave on arts and culture and I am very proud to represent my country on an international scale to tell our story and our artistic perspectives to the world.
UAE is a very traditional place with a huge ancient heritage- are you inluenced by this treasure of customs and traditions or you have your Own artistic visions?
Even though the UAE has a history that dates back to almost 800 years old documented in archaeological wealth, it has become a melting pot to civilizations and cultures from all around the world living together in harmony under one roof.
My artistic vision is deeply rooted in the Emirati culture and uniqueness, but its outreach is global.
I am always inluenced by the great works of international artists in more than one direction; I have been invited to showcase my work in many international galleries.
My portfolio includes individual artworks in video, photography and installation art.
Received by local and international artists and curators and featured in local media, I unveiled my debut solo exhibition he black Garment: An Oriental Story in March 2012 featuring a series of hand embroided photograms as a patron of art in the UAE, and received the Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashed Patrons of the Arts Award in 2012.
His gallery is a true example to a traditional Emirati element; the abaya, and how I transformed it into an internationally recognized work of art using a forgotten camera-less photography technique to form intertwined lines covering all shades between white and black depicting the tiniest motion and reaction.
I attribute much of my inspiration thanks to many workshops in Museology and heritage studies and many advanced workshops in photography techniques, curation and gallery management with key international artists and professionals including Steve Macleod from Atlas Gallery and Sebastien Montabonel from Phillips De Pury in 2010-2011.
You belong to a very famous historical family..your grand parents and parents belong to the history book of UAE- how do you express this historical background in your art work?
This wealth of heritage gives me a strong foundation in my art and very much assigned a great deal of responsibility on me.
Historians document events in full facts but artists tell stories from their own perspectives, and for me having both outlooks in one window frame, complements one others but also brings a great deal of responsibility.
I strive in my works as an artist to convey inluencing messages of my country and my beliefs in spreading knowledge, exchanging experiences and positivity.
You are a young, modern woman- how do you describe your own
vision about MODERNITY in UAE ART FIELD?
A modern woman in the UAE is a conident, ambitious and educated woman who strives to excel in her respective ield, works hard to balance between her career and her family needs. We have a very good support system for working mothers to support their decision in joining the work force.
He government empowers women to continue their higher education, travel on exchange programs, and do more. Female university enrollment in the UAE universities is more than 50% of the total student body.
We have women ministers for happiness and for tolerance.
And art ield is no exception from this picture. UAE is proud to have many Emirati artists in contemporary arts, photography and videography, fashion design, and all ields in the spectrum of art.
Emirati women artists organize galleries to showcase their work, travel to the world museums and galleries to shape their experience and feed their inspiration. Perhaps the passionate Emirati women working on Le Louvre Abu Dhabi is a witness to the strong art wave in the UAE.
Hat’s how I see modernity in the UAE art ield from a young modern woman perspective.
What is your artistic target? What is your own artistic message?
I think that for an artwork to deliver a message, it has to stir feelings in the observer, provoke certain thoughts and assumptions and drive a conclusion to their heart and mind. Otherwise, it is just a decorative piece.
My artworks are open to people from all schools of thought. hey are subject to the interaction and interpretation to diferent cultures as I try to speak a universal language of love, dreaming, the generosity of the people of the UAE, portraits of baba Zayed, the founder of the UAE and the father of giving and helping across nations.
Do you believe that art can be a multicultural language between
nations and countries?
I am a irm believer that arts and music are universal languages that cross all linguistic, cultural, geographical and psychographic boundaries to reach every soul.
Are you inspired by the old times of UAE or more by the new times
of UAE?
Baba Zayed instilled in our hearts the foundations of my beloved UAE. We grew up to appreciate all the hardships that our grandfathers went though and be thankful for where we are today.
Baba Zayed’s exact words draw this lesson for life: here is no glory without the glory of the country and its citizens.
We have to be proud of our forefathers, who were able to face the harshness of life with a strong will and dedication to shape a better collective future».
We also learnt from him the greatest lesson in taking pride in our past and building on it: «A nation without a past is a nation without a present or a future».
UAE past gives me great strength in knowing that we did the undoable. he desert was transformed into green oasis, the-once-described as unit soil grew fruits and vegetables, and the tallest buildings, solar power community, man-built islands, ministries of tolerance and happiness, worldwide leading achievements and many more are some images linked to the UAE in everyone’s mind.
He story of my beloved UAE gives me persistence and ambition that any dream can be turned into reality with hard work and passion.
My artworks relect my love story with the past inluenced by my future outlook. It’s very intertwined and I can’t have one without the other.
what kind of music do you like to hear during your art creations?
Traditional music or modern Arabian music?
I am a human of the world. Great artists in the classical world inluence me, but modern beats also keep me grounded to the now.
Depending on the work I am doing, whether I am in a nostalgic mood or progressive attitude with my artwork, the music follows suite.
As an artist for sure you are very sensitive, emotional ..what is your favorite subject for your artistic creations?
I love face portraits, I avoid straight lines, I like lowing patterns, and non-conventional means in transcending an idea.
I love combining contrasts to highlight the closeness despite diferences.
Dear sheikha, how do you represent Abu Dhabi artistic life of now
days?
I participate in many galleries that showcase the artworks of Emirati artists, and international galleries that bring together the work of many internationally celebrated artists.
Tankfully, my artworks always succeed in bridging cultures and opening communication channels into our beloved UAE culture.
Abu Dhabi life nowadays is a city deeply rooted in its rich history, very open to the world, hosting more than 200 nationalities living in harmony. And the art mirror relects this image.
My artworks not only depict the today life of Abu Dhabi but also, converses the emotions and energy we live in today.
Since long time, UAE is very famous thanks to your grandfather
Sheikh Zayed al Nahyan and your grandmother Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak..
My last question is : how do you express your feelings for THIS EMBLEMATIC
PERSONALITIES in your art work?
I consider myself very fortunate to be the granddaughter of two world leading igures my grandfather Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyanm founder of the UAE bless his soul, and Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Mother of the nation.
I walk in their footsteps and learn so much from the life lessons of my grandfather.
I consult my grandmother and continue to learn from her wisdom and ambitions. She is an inspiring role model with a great vision.
