Jessica Lange received the CineMerit Award and thus the very first CineWave at the 41st Munich International Film Festival yesterday evening, June 30.

The two-time Oscar-, three-time Emmy-, and Tony Award-winner, best known for her roles in the films “Tootsie” and “Blue Sky”, was honored with the award for her achievements in the cinematic arts.

“We are extremely happy that an incredible artist is among us tonight to accept our CineMerit Award, that she is here in Munich for the first time: at a wonderful moment in her career, when a documentary about her photography is about to be made, when she has given us another incredible season of her most specific and unique art of acting — both on the stage and in film,” said Festival Director Christoph Gröner and Artistic Co-Director Julia Weigl in their remarks honoring Lange.

At the festive “Evening with Jessica Lange”, the presentation of the award was followed by a screening of the actress’s latest film, “The Great Lillian Hall” (director: Michael Cristofer, screenplay: Elisabeth Seldes Annacone).

Lange is also in Munich to present a further project she cares deeply about. Starting on July 2, the public is invited to admire photographic works by the CineMerit Award-winner at the Deutsches Theatermuseum. The exhibition “Through Her Lens” showcases a personal selection of her images, which evocatively reflect different phases of her photographic oeuvre as presented in her two most recent photo books, “Highway 61” (2019) and “Dérive” (2023).
