Sultan Haitham ben Tariq receives Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune with honors
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, re-elected last September with nearly 95% as head of the Algerian Republic, is touring Arab countries. The president first spent a few days in Egypt before heading to Oman, where he was expected to make a three-day state visit on Monday. Just a few days ago, Le Monde reported on the tensions that are intensifying between Algeria and the European continent, particularly with France, a country that President Tebboune now refuses to visit.

The West is gradually supporting Morocco in the thorny diplomatic issue concerning the sovereignty of Western Sahara, against the opposing opinion of Algeria. While French President Emmanuel Macron is making a historic state visit to Morocco to seal this reconciliation with his former protectorate, at the same time, Algerian President Tebboune is making a state visit to the Sultanate of Oman, to consolidate Arab partnerships on his side.

President Tebboune was welcomed with honors by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, head of state of the sultanate since 2020. The new sultan is successfully continuing the development of the sultanate that he inherited from his cousin, Sultan Qaboos, who died after nearly 50 years of reign. Sultan Haitham received the Algerian president at Qasr al-‘Alam, or the Flag Palace, which is the royal palace in Muscat. The Algerian president is accompanied by a large ministerial delegation, which met with the Omani government.

This Tuesday, October 29, 2024, the Algerian president met with the Omani authorities, participated in bilateral talks and carried out the traditional diplomatic ceremonies in the presence of the Omani sovereign. Sheikh Haitham notably offered a kandjar, which is an Omani dagger. The kandjar is the emblem of the country, even appearing on the flag of Oman and on the coat of arms of the royal family. For his part, President Tebboune offered a flissa made by the craftsmen of Beni Yeni. A flissa is a traditional Algerian saber.
In the evening, the two heads of state proceeded with the ceremony of exchanging diplomatic gifts and distinctions. The Sultan of Oman offered a kandjar to his guest and presented him with the insignia of the Order of Al-Said (Photo: Oman Royal Family)

Before the state dinner lavishly hosted by the Sultan of Oman, the two heads of state exchanged honorary distinctions. The Algerian president received the highest Omani distinction, the Al-Said Order Medal. This award is only given to members of royal families and heads of state. It bears the name of the Al-Said dynasty that has reigned over the Sultanate of Oman since 1744. In exchange, President Tebboune presented the National Merit Medal of the “Athir” rank to Sultan Haitham.
