Beautiful CHENINI

Roman arch bridge

Roman arch Bridge of Chenini locally called El gous erroumany»
is located in the village of Chenini Gabes inTunisia,
The Chenini oasis is located in the south-east of Tunisia, more precisely in the west of the governorate of Gabes. It is one of the few coastal oases (by the sea) in the world.
Tourists come especially to visit this bridge, which crosses the road of the oasis.

It is made of local limestone blocks. , and It is composed of a single arch and parapet, and having suffered considerable degradation, it was restored in the sixties of the last century.
The bridge wasn’t built to cross a river but to cross a road, and water passes over it and not under it.
The bridge takes water to farms for irrigation, because this oasis is the site of intensive agriculture of date palms, fruit trees (including the cultivation of pomegranate) and vegetable and fodder crops.
This bridge with hundreds and hundreds of roman bridges still left standing in all across the world are a witness of the importance of building techniques of Ancient Rome even today.

LEGENDARY CHENINI

Tunisia is one of the favorite holiday destinations for the German tourists. Especially the Bavarians love to change the forests and mountains with the blooming oasis of Chenini.

Here, the family friendly environment meets and greets the romantic atmosphere and the colourful traditional Folklore.
The Governorate of Gabes with the amazing Chenini oasis, opens the portals to important ancient heritages like the bridges from Roman Empire's old times. Miraculously preserved, the bridges in stone and arch are not only historical artifacts but a treasure for the present time.
