"WOMEN, ART & IDENTITIES IN MENA COUNTRIES"

CONFERENCE FEBRUARY 12, 2025

Women artists from the Middle East and North Africa too often remain in the shadows, despite a vibrant and diverse artistic scene. For this edition of FAMM Hour, we welcome Laure d’Hauteville, founder of MENART Fair, and Naïla Kettaneh Kunigk, director of Galerie Tanit, two figures committed to promoting these talents to talk to us about them.

WOMEN, ART & IDENTITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA (MENA) COUNTRIES

Often overshadowed by dominant narratives and stereotypes, women artists from the MENA deserve to be highlighted and recognized for their talent and contribution to art history. It is important to deconstruct preconceived ideas about women in Arab-Persian societies by showing the diversity of their artistic expressions and giving them a voice. By highlighting women artists from the MENA, we enrich the global art scene and offer a new perspective on MENA art that is more nuanced and less stereotypical. Cultural institutions on an international scale have a major role to play in this regard and this is a topic that we will discuss with Laure D'Hauteville and Naïla Kettaneh.

LAURE D'HAUTEVILLE

Art historian and founder of MENART Fair, Laure d’Hauteville has been working since the 1990s to connect the Western and Arab art scenes. Through her art fairs and her commitment to photography and teaching, she actively supports emerging talents. In September 2024, she will dedicate the 5th edition of MENART Fair exclusively to women artists from MENA, a key step forward for their visibility.

NAÏLA KETTANEH

Founder of Galerie Tanit, Naïla Kettaneh has played a major role in promoting contemporary art in the Middle East. Her exhibition "Plural Femininities" (2018) revealed 19 modern and contemporary Lebanese artists, including Etel Adnan and Huguette Caland. More than a gallery owner, she is a key figure in the artistic dialogue between the East and the West.
